Merrimack Street Hydrant Replacement

We are replacing a critical hydrant at the intersection of Merrimack and Granite Streets on Thursday October 8th, 2020.  Due to the difficulty of the location in terms of safety concerns we are using Leighton White Sitework Services to assist us.  They are scheduled to begin digging approximately 7AM.  If all goes well, this should be a half day job but you never know.  The hydrant is sandwiched in a very tight space between a large retaining wall, a utility pole and Merrimack Street, which is quite the busy road with no shoulder.  The hydrant is dated from 1950 and the old main was there before that, meaning this is an older section of the system and you never know what you might find when you start digging.  We try to hope for the best and plan for the worst.  As always, we will try to be as least disruptive to traffic and people’s lives as possible.  Unfortunately, as with all construction activities, this is not always possible, but we are aware of our impact and please know that trained professionals are trying to improve the water system for everyone’s benefit.  If you have questions, please call our office.
